The rapid assessment of apple scab on fruit

The assessment of apple scab (Venturia inaequalis (Cooke) Wint.) on leaves provides valuable information on the progress of scab during the season, but, for the estimation of the economic losses caused by the disease, assessment of scab on the fruits is essential.

Two methods of assessment are here outlined. One is a standard diagram method, used at or after picking, by which the actual amount of scab on the fruits may be determined, and an indication of the economic loss can be obtained. The other is a visual method, using a key similar to that for scab on leaves (Croxall, Gwynne and Jenkins, 1952) by which the progress of scab development on the fruits may be followed during the growing season.
